Short answers about CCCURJ, the California Community College Undergraduate Research Journal.

**What is CCCURJ?**

CCCURJ, the California Community College Undergraduate Research Journal, is a student-run, open-access preprint archive and peer-reviewed journal for research by California Community College students. Students post preprints in any subject, and work that passes open peer review is published in its journal, CCCURJ Flagship.

**Who can submit to CCCURJ?**

The submitting author must be a current California Community College student, a recent graduate of a California Community College, or a student who did the research while enrolled at one. University or faculty co-authors are welcome if a qualifying student made a substantive contribution. [More](https://cccurj.org/about#eligibility)

**What can I submit?**

Research articles, literature reviews, replication studies, research notes, datasets, software and research in progress, in any subject of the CCCURJ category taxonomy. Each submission includes its LaTeX source and the PDF compiled from it. [More](https://cccurj.org/help/artifacts)

**Can I publish a dataset or software instead of a paper?**

Yes. Put the files in a public repository such as Zenodo, OSF, Dryad or GitHub, write a short PDF (usually 2 to 6 pages, from the CCCURJ LaTeX template) that describes them, and submit it as a Dataset or Software with the link. It gets a permanent CCCURJ identifier and can apply for peer review in CCCURJ Flagship like any article. [More](https://cccurj.org/help/artifacts#beyond-papers)

**Is CCCURJ peer-reviewed?**

Preprints in the CCCURJ archive are checked by a preprint editor for scope, format, disclosures and eligibility, but they are not peer-reviewed. Articles in CCCURJ Flagship have passed open peer review by at least two student peer reviewers, handled by a managing editor; the reports, reviewer names, author responses and decision are published with each article. [More](https://cccurj.org/help/preprints-and-flagship)

**Does it cost anything?**

Reading CCCURJ is free, and creating an account to submit or review is free.

**What license does CCCURJ use?**

Every preprint, CCCURJ Flagship article and published review is released under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license (CC BY 4.0). Authors keep their copyright. [More](https://cccurj.org/help/license)

**How do I cite a CCCURJ paper?**

Cite a preprint by its identifier, for example CCCURJ:2610.00003v1. Cite a CCCURJ Flagship article by journal, volume, article number and year, for example CCCURJ Flagship 1, 7 (2026). [More](https://cccurj.org/help/identifier)

**Who runs CCCURJ?**

CCCURJ is run by California Community College students with faculty advice. It was founded by Maxwell Koegler, a student at Diablo Valley College. Preprint editors check work posted to the archive, managing editors run peer review for CCCURJ Flagship, and a Faculty Advisory Board advises but does not make editorial decisions. The first CCCURJ Flagship issue is planned for March 2027.

**Is CCCURJ affiliated with the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office?**

No. CCCURJ is an independent, student-run project. It is not an official publication of the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office or of any college or district.

**How can students get involved?**

Students can submit research, or apply to be a peer reviewer, a preprint editor or a managing editor from their account. The most active editors and reviewers are thanked on the public leaderboard. [More](https://cccurj.org/flagship/reviewers)

**How can faculty get involved?**

Faculty can mentor student authors, co-author with students, and faculty at California community colleges can apply to the Faculty Advisory Board. Reviewing and editing are student roles. [More](https://cccurj.org/faculty)

**Can authors use generative AI?**

Authors may use generative AI as a research or writing aid where permitted, but must disclose substantive use and remain responsible for their work. Reviewers must not upload manuscripts to external AI systems.
