# Formatting with LaTeX

Every submission and every new version must be written in LaTeX. Upload the source together with the PDF compiled from it; the editors check that they match. The source is archived with the paper but not published.

[Download the template project (.zip)](https://cccurj.org/latex/cccurj-template.zip) [Single .tex file](https://cccurj.org/latex/cccurj-template.tex)

The .zip has a main.tex with an example figure, the figure file, and a README. Upload it to Overleaf with New Project → Upload Project.

## Requirements

- Use the CCCURJ template or the standard [IEEE template](https://www.ieee.org/conferences/publishing/templates) (`IEEEtran`).
- Upload one .tex file, or a .zip or .tar.gz with the main .tex file, figures and .bib files. Leave out build files (.aux, .log, .out).
- The source must compile with pdfLaTeX, XeLaTeX or LuaLaTeX and standard TeX Live packages, without `--shell-escape`.
- Include a disclosures section (funding, conflicts of interest, generative AI use), as in the template.

## Figures and files

You upload two things: your **whole LaTeX project as one .zip**, and the **PDF** compiled from it.

```
my-paper.zip
├── main.tex              your paper
├── references.bib        your bibliography, if you use BibTeX
└── figures/
    ├── survey-results.png
    └── map.pdf
```

1. Put each figure file in your project, for example in a `figures/` folder. Use **PNG or JPG** for photos and screenshots, and **PDF** for charts and diagrams (they stay sharp).
2. Include it with `\includegraphics[width=\columnwidth]{figures/survey-results}` inside a `figure` environment with a `\caption`; the template shows how.
3. Use simple file names without spaces: `survey-results.png`, not `Survey Results (final).png`.
4. When the PDF looks right, download the project: in Overleaf, **Menu → Download → Source** (the .zip) and **Menu → Download → PDF**. Working on your own computer? Zip the folder with the .tex, .bib and figures.

When you upload, CCCURJ checks that every figure, `\input` file and bibliography your .tex uses is in the .zip, and tells you exactly which is missing. Leave out build files (.aux, .log, .out); they are not needed.

## So Google Scholar can index your paper

- Keep the PDF under **5 MB**; Google Scholar skips larger files. Compress large figures.
- Compile it from LaTeX so the text is searchable. Never upload a scanned or printed-to-image PDF.
- Use outline (Type 1) fonts: add `\usepackage{lmodern}` or `\usepackage{times}`. Bitmap (Type 3) fonts make the text hard to read for indexers.
- Put the title at the top of the first page in the largest type, with the authors' full names below it.
- End with a section headed **References**, numbered [1], [2], ... with one formal citation each.
- Use the same title and author names in the PDF and in the submission form.

## New to LaTeX?

Upload the template to [Overleaf](https://www.overleaf.com/), a free online editor, and use its [guides](https://www.overleaf.com/learn). Download the PDF and the source (Menu > Download > Source) when you are done.
